In this tutorial I show how to send midi signal from Ableton Live to Modul8 on the Mac via the IAC Driver. This is a great way to create cross-fades between random scenes of videos or images loaded into Modul8. You can also control any other perimeter from Ableton Live that you would from any other midi controller. It opens up limitless possibilities in the realms of VJing and DJing combined. Watch the video below and download the companion Ableton Live 8 template.

(note: For some reason the audio wasn’t working for the first 15 seconds or so.)

After a long time wishing for the latest version I finally upgraded to Ableton Live 8 for my music production, and I love it! There are so many great new features including the looper device, vocoder and frequency shifter. I’ve also started VJ a bit, and you can see my latest video on my homepage. I am starting to get into live electronic music remixing with my own songs. Want to sync video with it too. Pretty soon I’ll be able to trigger loops and sections of my songs, remix/dub them out live and trigger video clips at the same time using my Korg microKONTROL and iPod Touch to send midi. I just need a video projector now, and a huge soundsystem/audience, and I’ll be good to go…

Last night I made this piece of music in the 528Hz frequency which I’ve just discovered to be 1.47 cents tuned up from C5 on the keyboard. This frequency is known as the Miracle or Love frequency and has been used for healing cells. There is a big movement happening around this frequency now. I just designed a website for a friend who has started a line of ayurvedic superfood products. Check it out: Supergreen528Hz.com

I am going to be making a video to go with the music I made in 528Hz, and share it soon. I will post it as soon as it manifests. Thanks for reading.

I am also excited about another website I designed for a local Asheville friend who is offering information about Yurts. Check this out: LaurelNestYurts.com

Psybient is about creating a sonic journey. The goal of psybient is to create a sound scape that can be enjoyed over a long period of time. Pink Floyd’s ’shine on you crazy diamond’ is a perfect example of the mentality behind Psybient. As is Animals.

Another album is Fates Warning’s ‘a pleasant shade of gray’. This album; if you’ve never heard it, is one song divided into 12 parts. This illustrates the mentality you need to create Psybient. Separate pieces of a whole, joining together to create a continuous sound scape, while still being individual songs.

While the sounds of psybient are vast in scope because it uses influences from many places. Including trance, new age, and even glitch. The emphasis is creating an atmospheric experience; like all ambient music, for an extended peiod of time, while still exploring different tempos, sounds and feels. The idea is to create songs that flow into each other, while still being separate.

Try finding a single good melody, and use that in a variety of forms as a joining factor for the pieces. Alternatively you can use a single repeating sound, or melody to Bring them all together.

I have used a running water sound, with a succession of freestyle Keyboard melodies. The result is over twenty minutes of music, all tied together by similar backing noise (the water) and style of playing.

Another trick Ive used is to simply use one element to tie the end of one track into another. I have used that trick on some of my rave tracks, but the concept is the same.

Pick an element you like, preferably part of the beat and continue it from one track into the next. You can then develop the track, and go anywhere you like with it. Then just pick another element that ends that track and pick up on it in the next.

My name is Ryan and My love in life is music. Listening to it, making it and exploring it. Music really is my drive in life.

I create acidhedz.com to help people learn to make their own music, and to showcase my own. I would like to share my love of music and the joy that come with creating your own, with everyone. Over time the site has expanded to include resources for bands looking to promote their music. [http://acidhedz.com/wordpress/new-acidhedz-posts]

What is Beat-matching?

It is the art of mixing two musical compositions together seamlessly by speeding up or slowing down one of the songs to align their rhythms.

Basically, you need to be able to hear whether the beat you are adjusting is faster or slower. In order to do this you need skill which comes from an ear for tempo and lots of practice.

A good DJ knows how to beat-match.

Step 1

You need to have a way to listen to one track in the headphones while another track is playing on the main sound system.

Step 2

Play a track though the sound system.

Step 3

Find another track in your headphones you want to beat-match with the one playing. (This is done on a DJ mixer by turning on the Cue for the track you want to listen to.)

Step 4

Find the first beat of the track you are going to mix in, and hold it right there. If you’re using turntables or CDJs you can just grab on to the top of the record or CDJ to essentially pause the track where the beat begins.

Step 5

Listen to the beat playing through the main speakers. Wait for it to get to the first beat of a cycle. (Music in 4/4 timing usually is all built around cycles of 4 and 8 counts. ie. 4 beats in a bar, and 4 bars segments that lead to builds and changes in the music.) When you feel the music hit on the first beat with a crash or whatever, that is right when you want to play the beat you are mixing in. (in your headphones only)

Step 6

Immediately after releasing your hold on the record or CDJ, you must listen closely in your headphones with one ear to detect whether the beat you are mixing in is going slower or faster than the one already playing. If it’s going slower then adjust the pitch slider, and maybe even give it a little push to help it catch up to record A faster. If it’s going faster than record A then turn down the pitch slider on the turntable or CDJ accordingly to make it the same speed. You may even want to touch the side of the turntable plate or CDJ to slow it down faster.

Step 7

Once you have the beats aligned perfectly (or close to anyway), move the cross fader on the DJ mixer to the center with the bass cut on the beat you are mixing in. (you don’t want the basses of both tracks going at the same time) Then when it seems like the right moment switch the basses either slowly or fast and the switch over to the next track on the first beat of first cycle.

This articles was written by DJ Story who has been DJing for 11 years, and you can see beat-matching examples in his electro house demo mix video.

It’s about to be 2010, and you know what that means… It’s time to have the best year ever! I mean party like there’s no tomorrow. Life is more fun if you enjoy it, so stop complaining about stuff, and start appreciating it. This year is going to be the year things start to go right for all of us. That is the positive attitude to go into this year with.

I want you to take a deep breath, and remember all the things that happened last year that you are grateful for. Write them down if you can and imagine all that and more happening for you this year too. Everything you’ve always desired can come to be this year if you let it. Feel the love in your heart, and remember why you’re here.

It features 16 tracks by DJ Story, and is worth every penny. If you’re a DJ these tracks will make your set hot and spicy! DJ Story was sure to put extra care and love into creating this album, and it has a very specific purpose. That is to be fun to dance to. If you like funky tech house beats, then this is the album for you. If you’re not happy with it…well you will be.

Whenever I play this album I start dancing uncontrollably. I think that’s a good sign when looking for good dance music to get the crowd excited. These songs will compliment your DJ set nicely, and create a fun atmosphere for everyone involved. They call him DJ Story because, he tells a story with the music, it conveys that story to the listeners. In this case the story is how much fun you will have dancing to these grooves.

DJ Story offers a wide range of skills in multimedia production. He has helped many over the years to get there ideas down, and even created many songs used in movies and live performances. Here a some of the ways in which DJ Story serves humanity:

Music Production

Whether you need a whole album or just a song, I can help you get your vision down on recording in my portable studio. I have collaborated with many artists over the years such as Sasha Rose, Luna Moth, Sirus B, Sam David, Dr. Do Right, Malcolm Dorje, Jonathan Arthur, Nina Ranjalita, Love, Onyay, Alicia Lions, Karren Elizabeth, DJ Profeta, B-Wise, Heidi D, Dominion and more… I’ve just about every kind of genre you can think of such as Pop, Classical, Country, Hip Hop, Rock, Oldies, Acoustic, Indian Chants, Reggae, Dub, Techno, House, Trance, Ambient, or whatever sound you’re looking for. I was recently hired to record an ambient meditation cd called “Whale Trance” for my friends on Maui. More recently I’ve been here in Asheville getting paid to record Hip Hop vocals of some of the local artists.

Music Licensing

I have a huge library of original musical compositions (primarily instrumental) which I am offering. I have licensed my music to be used in several independent movies, and there are a number of artists who use music I’ve worked on in their live performances. I also am willing to license beats to be used by rappers or songwriters. If you would like to get a license to use my music for something you’re doing, get in touch.

Web Design

Do need a gallery to display your visionary art? I am also an avid web designer, so if you need a website that gets lots of search engine traffic, or a cool custom wordpress site like this one for all your articles, news and updates, check out my web design portfolio.

Flash Development

Do you need a really nifty flash slideshow? How about some animation? Maybe you need a widget like a custom music player for your site, or a video player. Or, perhaps you want an entire website built in Flash. I can help you with all your flash development needs.

Photoshop Graphics

I have lots of experience making graphics in Photoshop used professionally for book covers, business cards, logos, banners, web graphics, flyers, album art, and other promotional materials. I do photo touch-ups, and I can even turn you into a mythical creature like a mermaid or a butterfly. Whatever your graphic design needs may be, I can help.

Video Editing

I helped to edit the promotional video for the Mystic Garden Party Festival. I have also taken classes with final cut pro, and I have some more video projects on the way. If you need help editing your video for a short film. I’ve got you covered.

Get in touch if you would like to hire me for any of your production or promotional needs.

Many people who are aspiring DJs are making the difficult decision of whether to use vinyl records on a turntable or to DJ with CDs on a CDJ-type CD players. Both approaches have their strengths and weaknesses. Most good clubs that you might DJ at have the ability to play both CDs and vinyl and you can bring whichever you prefer.

Playing vinyl is considered the most authentic approach to DJing. The art of DJing was born on turntables and most old school DJs would never consider doing anything else. The downsides are the turntables are delicate and expensive mechanical objects. Records themselves are also rather fragile and expensive to buy.

DJing with CDs is probably the most common approach these days. They are most commonly played with CDJ decks made by Pioneer or similar products sold by competing companies. These are special CD players that are designed to emulate the ability of a turntable to adjust the speed of a track and to move within a track as easily as possible in order to queue up your songs and match the beat of two overlapping songs.

One of the main benefits of playing off of CDs is the ability to download music from the Internet. This gives you easy access to a much broader selection of music than you would be able to easily get on vinyl, even if you live in a large city with a lot of record stores. Most CD DJs burn their own CDs with all of their favorite tracks. If a CD gets scratched, broken or lost, they can simply burn a new copy very quickly and cheaply.
